Lighting Project Design in Dialux Software

Relevance

In order to select a proper LED luminaire for a specific application, we should make engineering calculations to prove our selection. In the lighting design, there are various approaches used before LED, like coefficient or approximation-based approaches using consumption power and total light output, depending on the height of installation. This was more or less convenient for typical applications, using older technologies which were standardised by light source power (wattage), and there were just a few options. With LED technology, we can regulate the light output in a 20-100% range and get different luminous or power consumption values, while also achieving the highest energy efficiency values. Therefore, we need to have modelling tools to have fast results, and Dialux Evo software is one of the most used tools for lighting designers.

Abstract

This building block provides a guided introduction to help learners use the Dialux Evo modelling software, focusing on simpler applications such as street or room lighting design. Further, insight into more advanced designs, like whole building level, exterior (area) lighting for a stadium is shared, both in video format and *.evo files, thus the student can play around with real industrial applications and designs, see how engineers have done one or another design, report documentation, valuation fields. Real projects make a difference in the learning process. Two additional homework assignments are given for self-evaluation and the creation of designs for room and street lighting.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this building block, the learner:

  1. Installs and sets up the latest Dialux Evo software version, knows where to find updated tutorials and starts first lighting design projects.

  2. Understands various application possibilities and differentiates related design functions accordingly.

  3. Creates the first Dialux Evo project design for indoor room lighting.

  4. Creates the first Dialux Evo project for street lighting.

  5. Assesses and optimises lighting system to fulfil the criteria of standards, while also find least consuming solution, to increase energy efficiency.

  6. Use and explore real industrial Dialux EVO project examples in Dialux for various applications.
