State of the art and future street lighting communication technologies

0 Enrollments Level : Intermediate

Relevance

Street lighting systems emerged to create more attractive environment – create visibility in dark hours of the day.

Arrived in 21st century Emitting Diodes, increase of the efficiency of power electronics-based LED drivers, allowing dimming capabilities, integration of information and communication technologies (ICT) is obvious.

“LED-driver-communication-sensors” system is the backbone of today’s street lighting systems. Such system and system components are explained more widely and in details in this course.

Abstract

State of the art (Radio, ZigBee, PLC, WiFi, LoRa, etc) and future (5G-NB IoT, LiFi, etc) street lighting communication technologies are important component of nowdays Smart street lighting and new concept called a Smart City.

Systems can be based on ordinary communication tools and protocols, Internet of Things (IoT) tools and products, and a combination of both. A brief history of electronic communication explain todays State of the Art communication requirements  in area of lighting , street lighting and devlopment of Smart Cities.

This course information about possible communication tools etc., sets the background for understanding the relevance of smart street lighting within the larger context of smart urban ecosystems.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Ability to differentiate between different means for smart lighting system control and management, understanding different communication systems cons and pros, historical background of communication and control of lighting systems in city level.

  1. Understand and identify the core components and tools of communication systems for street lighting systems management: such as wireless and cable communication protocols, IoT integration, mixed wireless IoT and cable IoT software and hardware.

  1. Assess sustainability impacts: by means of how communication contributes to energy efficiency, digital waste, cost savings, and environmental sustainability within urban settings.

  1. Evaluate Case Studies and Best Practices from given examples.

Prior Knowledge

General Electric engineering, data communication methods, device connection versions to internet, basic programming in C-like programming languages.

Basic knowledge about microcontrollers and electronic circuits, programming is needed to understand the code examples or cerate you own designs.

This course initially is intended for ECT6 level students, but is suitable also for wider auditorium, designed as introductory course to understand the basic concept of smart street lighting communication technologies.
