Tulane University of Louisiana, [6] is a private research university in New Orleans, Louisiana. Founded as the Louisiana College of Medicine in 1834 by a group of medical doctors, it became a comprehensive state university within the University of Louisiana in 1847. [7] The institution became private under the endowment of Paul Tulane and Josephine Louise Newcomb in 1884 and 1887, respectively.
