Bengkulu University (UNIB) was established based on the decision of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Number 17 of 1982 and was inaugurated by the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. David Joseph. At the same time the first UNIB Chancellor was appointed, Prof. Ir. Soenjoto Sumodihardjo (UGM) for the 1982-1986 term. Dr. Ir. Soekotjo (UGM), who previously served as Vice Rector I, led UNIB for the period 1986-1990. For the period 1990-1995 Dr. Ir. Nitza Arbi (UNAND) was given the trust to lead UNIB. From 1995 to 2005 the position of Rector of UNIB was held by Prof. Dr. H Zulkifli Husin, S.E, M.Sc. (UNSYIAH). From 2005 to 2013 the Chancellor of UNIB was held by Prof. Ir. Zainal Muktamar, Msc., Ph.D. On October 4, 2013 Dr. Ridwan Nurazi, S.E., M.Sc., Ak as the 6th Rector of Bengkulu University.
