The forerunner of the State University of Malang is the Teacher Education College (PTPG) in Malang which was inaugurated by the Minister of Education, Teaching, and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Mr. Mohammad Yamin, on October 18, 1954 based on Decree No. 38742 / Kab on September 1, 1954. At the same time, Prof. Sutan Adam Bachtiar was assigned as Chancellor of PTPG Malang. At the beginning of its establishment, PTPG Malang had five pioneering majors, namely the Indonesian Language and Literature Department, English Language and Literature, History and Culture, Economics, and Natural Sciences. Meanwhile, lectures were held in the Tugu High School building (now SMA Negeri 1, SMA Negeri 3, and SMA Negeri 4 Malang). A year later, precisely on June 20, 1955, PTPG had its own building in the former Splendid Hotel located on Jalan Tumapel 1, Malang.
