Pattimura University began when Dr. J. B. Sitanala and several community leaders initiated the establishment of a Higher Education institution in Maluku to realize the aspirations of the people who want to participate in the development of the Nation and the State, especially in the field of Higher Education and Knowledge Science Development. For this reason the West Irian Maluku University Foundation was formed on July 20, 1955, chaired by Cornelis Loppies who succeeded in establishing the Faculty of Law on October 3, 1956. On October 3, 1956, it was later established as the birthday of Pattimura University. Then the Faculty of Social and Politics on 6 October 1959, and on 10 September 1961 the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education was opened.
